CHUMPHON, THAILAND – The Provincial Court of Chumphon sentenced 29‑year‑old BMW driver Ms. Jiranthanin to four years and seven months in prison on 12 May 2025 for a fatal crash that killed a mother and her two children on 27 November 2024.
Fatal collision on Mueang district road
At about 9:30 p.m. on 27 November 2024, Ms. Jiranthanin’s BMW struck a motorcycle carrying Ms. Yenchit (52) and her children Kritmet (16) and Boonyanuch (14) on a rural road in Mueang district, Chumphon province. Police measured the impact zone at more than 60 metres from the point of collision. All three victims died instantly at the scene, according to Police Lieutenant Somchai Khamdee of the Mueang traffic unit, who confirmed that Ms. Jiranthanin’s blood test showed both alcohol and methamphetamine.
Court rejects suspended sentence
Judge Nattapong Wirasak stated during sentencing that the driver’s intoxication and attempt to flee made “A SUSPENDED SENTENCE IMPOSSIBLE GIVEN THE LOSS OF THREE LIVES.” The panel cited multiple offences: reckless driving, driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and failure to assist victims. Prosecutors originally requested nine years, and the court doubled the base penalty due to aggravating factors before halving it for her confession, resulting in the final term of four years and six months, plus one month for leaving the scene.
The court also imposed a fine for driving without a valid license and ordered the confiscation of the BMW involved in the crash.
Compensation and financial settlements
The victims’ husband, Mr. Yutthana Chaiyaphum (54), joined the case as co‑plaintiff, demanding 24.2 million baht (approx. €600,000) in damages. Ms. Jiranthanin later reached an out‑of‑court settlement for 5.5 million baht (about €135,000). She paid 500,000 baht upfront and agreed to monthly instalments of 30,000 baht, as confirmed by attorney Prawit Laohachai.
Insurance company Falcon Insurance Public Company Limited transferred an additional 4.5 million baht to the family in February 2025. These payments did not alter the criminal liability, the court clarified in its written judgment issued on 15 May 2025.
Bail with electronic monitoring
Although convicted, Ms. Jiranthanin was granted temporary release on 150,000 baht (approx. €3,700) bail after public prosecutor Anchalee Rattanasophon confirmed that the co‑plaintiff filed no objection. The court ordered her to wear an electronic monitoring device, remain within Thai borders, and notify officials of any change of residence.
“THE CONDITIONS ARE STRICT AND ANY VIOLATION WILL TRIGGER IMMEDIATE DETENTION,” Prosecutor Anchalee told reporters outside the courthouse on 16 May 2025. Both the Chumphon Provincial Prosecutor’s Office and the victim’s family retained the right to appeal within 30 days of the ruling.
Public debate on justice
Residents gathered near Tha Taphao sub‑district expressed anger that the driver remained free while appealing. Local teacher Ms. Wilawan Sriprom (41) said, “THREE PEOPLE DIED, AND SHE IS STILL OUTSIDE — IT FEELS UNFAIR.” Online petitions calling for harsher DUI penalties in Chumphon had collected over 10,000 signatures by 18 May 2025, according to community organizer Mr. Prasit Nochai. The Ministry of Justice acknowledged receipt of the petition through its Southern Region Office on 20 May 2025.
The case continues as the appeal process moves forward and Ms. Jiranthanin remains under court supervision until a final verdict is delivered.
