Chachoengsao, Thailand – A blind German pensioner discovered his 53-year-old Thai wife’s body at their home on the evening of 14 October after neighbours went to turn on the lights and found her apparently dead from a self-inflicted wound.
Discovery
At about 18:30, the 69-year-old man sat outside the house as he often did and waited for his wife. He had been left blind after a previous car accident and could not see what happened inside. When she did not return, he asked a neighbour to go inside and switch on the lights. The neighbour later recounted, “They called me to help turn on the light – and then we found her.” The woman was found lifeless by the stairs, apparently having injured herself with a sharp object.
Circumstances of the death
Police in Mueang Chachoengsao said the woman had returned home in the morning and told family about a taxi accident. The other party in that accident had reportedly demanded 40,000 Baht in compensation, roughly 1,000 euros, a sum the woman did not have. Investigators said she went home and, instead of negotiating the claim, appears to have taken her own life.
Investigation
Police Lieutenant Nawatpakorn Kunatchayasiran said officers secured the scene and preserved evidence. A forensic doctor from Phutthasothorn Hospital examined the body at the house before it was taken to the hospital for a full autopsy. Authorities treated the case as an apparent suicide but said they would continue inquiries to exclude other possibilities.
The couple’s life
The relationship between the two had been unusual: the German man moved to Thailand to spend his retirement and the couple had rented the house in Chachoengsao for more than a year. The woman, 53, worked as a taxi driver in Bangkok and returned home every two to three days. When she was away she would prepare food for her husband and leave it in the refrigerator; neighbours would sometimes cook for him when she was absent. The husband, who does not speak Thai, relied on a translating neighbour and was described as visibly distraught.
Community concern and next steps
Neighbours have expressed anxiety about who will now care for the blind pensioner. Local police said they were likely to notify the German embassy and continue their investigation. The community is left asking who will support him in the absence of his wife and what protections exist for vulnerable, elderly residents living abroad.
