NONG KHAI, THAILAND – A blacklisted Chinese engineer has been arrested after allegedly slipping back into Thailand via a natural border crossing on the Mekong River.
Blacklisted engineer intercepted after river crossing
Around 12:30 p.m. on 17 November, officers stopped a car with Chon Buri license plates on the Mekong riverfront road in Nong Khai. At the wheel was 43-year-old Chinese national Wang Tao, accompanied by 29-year-old Lao citizen Vaewmani. The pair had come to pick up 38-year-old Chinese engineer Qu Yuanyuan, who had just crossed the border illegally.
According to police, the group intended to travel onward to Prachin Buri, where Qu was to take on a subcontract for a factory construction project. A records check revealed that Qu was on Thailand’s blacklist, with entry banned for one year until 30 September 2026 due to a previous visa overstay that led to his deportation. Investigators said he appeared willing to risk illegal reentry to secure a lucrative position in the Thai construction sector.
Accomplices admit role as charges filed
During questioning, Vaewmani admitted her involvement.
“Wang invited me to Nong Khai to pick up Qu.”
said Vaewmani, who told officers that both she and Wang knew their friend was on the blacklist. Qu had arranged his illegal entry through a natural border crossing on the Mekong, with the meeting point set along the riverbank. Police moved in shortly after Qu entered the vehicle, arresting all three.
Investigators have charged Wang and Vaewmani with aiding and sheltering an illegal entrant, while Qu faces counts of illegal entry and stay in the kingdom. The suspects have been handed over to Nong Khai city police for formal proceedings, where they could face substantial fines and prison terms.
Authorities said the case underscores Thailand’s determination to combat illegal migration, even as long and porous borders complicate enforcement. The Mekong frontier with Laos remains particularly challenging to monitor, and officials hope the incident serves as a clear warning to those considering attempts to evade Thai immigration laws.
