PHUKET, THAILAND – A 58-year-old Australian tourist died in Patong after a physical altercation, and a 29-year-old Swedish citizen was taken into custody the same night as police opened a fatal assault investigation.
Dispute on Prachanukhro Road in Patong
The Australian, Alan Roger Joliffe, became involved in a verbal confrontation with a motorcyclist on Prachanukhro Road in Tambon Patong late Wednesday afternoon. According to police statements, the dispute was reportedly triggered by the rider sounding his horn.
The war of words escalated into a physical clash. Bystanders provided first aid at the scene and alerted emergency services. Joliffe was then transported to Patong Hospital for treatment.
Tourist dies hours after the attack
Doctors at Patong Hospital classified the 58-year-old’s condition as critical on arrival. Despite medical treatment, Joliffe was pronounced dead at 10:23 p.m., around five hours after the incident.
The body was transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital for a forensic examination. The official cause of death was to be determined by the medical examiner.
Police open investigation
Around 11 p.m., the hospital notified Patong Police Station of the death. Pol Lt Col Chanan Mekchai went to the scene with an investigative team and simultaneously ordered the preservation of evidence at the location of the altercation.
Under the supervision of Pol Col Korakrit Khanthakrue, investigators reviewed surveillance camera footage from the area and collected witness statements. The material was used to reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the confrontation.
CCTV footage leads to suspect in Kathu
Analysis of the CCTV recordings led officers to a 29-year-old Swedish national of Turkish background living in a condominium in Kathu district. He was arrested at about 4 a.m. on Thursday.
The suspect, identified by police only as Tugay, admitted during questioning that he had punched the Australian once in the face during the dispute. He denied using any further physical force.
Charge and detention – bail denied
On Thursday, 26 February, the 29-year-old was formally charged with bodily harm causing death and brought before Phuket Provincial Court for a detention hearing. Prosecutors successfully opposed his release on bail.
Pol Lt Col Chanan Mekchai was preparing the case file for further legal proceedings. The Australian embassy was informed of the tourist’s death, and police said their investigation was ongoing.
