BANGKOK, THAILAND – A global rush for flight slots pointed to a record tourist season in Thailand in the summer of 2026.
Massive demand at global slot conference
At a global flight-slot conference in Lisbon, 86 international airlines applied for access to Thai airports for the 2026 summer season. In total, carriers requested more than 270,000 flight movements, amounting to 543,738 individual take-off and landing slots.
“Demand exceeds all expectations.”
said CAAT, Thailand’s civil aviation authority, which noted that the global aviation industry was firmly backing the tourism-focused kingdom.
International carriers target key Thai markets
Of the requested slots, 308,572 were for international flights and 235,166 for domestic services, underlining Thailand’s status as a top destination. Major applicants included Lufthansa and British Airways from Europe, as well as United Airlines from the United States. From the Middle East, Emirates, Qatar Airways and the new Riyadh Air sought to expand, while South African Airways planned a return to the Thai market.
Asian airlines add routes and new gateways
From Asia, Air India, Korean Air and all major Chinese carriers pushed for more capacity, intensifying competition for passengers. Several airlines announced completely new routes into the country, with Thai Airways launching services from Jaipur in India. Gulf Air planned to link Bahrain with Phuket via Singapore, while Air India added a new Delhi–Koh Samui connection, and premium carrier Beond from the Maldives and Sun Phu Quoc Airways from Vietnam also aimed to fly to Thailand.
Bangkok to host next global slot conference
The aviation authority hailed the decision to award Thailand the next global slot conference as a major success, with the industry set to gather in Bangkok in June 2026.
“This underlines Thailand’s growing importance in global aviation.”
said an insider, adding that the country was positioning itself as a hub in Southeast Asia. The event was expected to attract hundreds of airlines and airport representatives, giving the kingdom a significant prestige boost.
Benefits and questions for travellers
For holidaymakers, the surge in interest promised more choice and downward pressure on ticket prices due to heightened competition. More remote destinations within Thailand were set to become easier to reach, making domestic travel more flexible thanks to the new routes. The summer of 2026 was projected to bring the most extensive flight network in the country’s history, simplifying vacation planning for visitors.
Tourism win amid capacity challenges
The strong appetite from airlines was seen as a vote of confidence in the future of Thailand’s tourism sector, which remained attractive despite recent crises. Authorities had managed capacities at key airports Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket and Chiang Mai in a targeted way, enabling the current expansion. According to the report, airlines, Thailand and above all international holidaymakers were all set to benefit, even as questions remained over whether infrastructure and regulators could keep pace with the aviation surge.
