PHUKET, THAILAND – A group of French tourists were accused of using artificial intelligence to fake images of a Phuket boat tour in a bid to secure a full refund.
AI used to turn clean vessel into alleged wreck
According to the Facebook account Phuket Times, the tourists booked a boat excursion and took numerous photos of the interior and exterior during the trip. Afterward, they allegedly used artificial intelligence tools to alter the images. In the edited photos, the boat appeared old, dirty and poorly maintained.
An inflatable slide tower seemed damaged and worn, while a bathroom was shown with a filthy toilet and scattered trash. A banana was depicted with rotten, moldy spots.
Unaltered “happy photo” undercuts refund claim
The group reportedly made a crucial mistake by also posting an unedited image from the same tour. It showed three cheerful French tourists visibly relaxed and in good spirits on board, contradicting the supposed dissatisfaction and claims of bad service.
The manipulated pictures were apparently intended to achieve just one goal: a complete refund of the tour price from the travel agency.
Online backlash and calls for legal action
The revelation triggered a wave of anger on Thai social media, where users demanded that authorities take legal action against the tourists.
“Such behavior harms the reputation and image of Phuket’s tourism industry.”
said multiple commenters, social media users.
The affected boat company had not issued an official statement, and it remained unclear whether the tourists had succeeded with their alleged attempt.
Pattern of alleged scams against hotels and restaurants
Commenters described the incident as part of a broader pattern. Numerous Thai hotel and restaurant owners reported similar experiences in the discussion threads.
One hotel operator recounted that French guests filed unfounded complaints after their stay in order to obtain a credit card refund despite flawless service. Another business owner said guests left after more than 10 days without paying 3,000 baht and later posted a negative review.
Artificial intelligence as a new fraud weapon
Observers saw the case as a warning sign of a dangerous trend in which AI becomes a tool for fraudulent refund claims. For businesses, distinguishing genuine complaints from fabricated evidence was becoming increasingly difficult, and the credibility of customer photos was eroding.
Experts warned of a potential new wave of digital compensation demands. Holidaymakers could use AI to dramatize minor shortcomings or invent them entirely.
Authorities, businesses and platforms urged to respond
Thai authorities and tourism associations were urged to take a clear stance and pursue such attempts as criminal offenses. Companies were encouraged to produce their own photo and video documentation of services to defend themselves against false accusations.
Booking platforms such as Booking.com and Airbnb were called on to review their refund policies and protect them against manipulative abuse. For Phuket, commentators stressed, the credibility of the entire tourism sector was at stake, and the fight against digital fraud had only just begun.
