PHUKET, THAILAND – A 12-year-old Myanmar girl must spend 30 days in the Phuket Juvenile Observation and Protection Centre. Police are investigating claims she attacked a 14-year-old Thai student in a school toilet. The court ordered her detention on August 11, 2026.
Cherng Talay police brought the girl before the Phuket Juvenile and Family Court within 24 hours of the formal accusation. The court ordered her held at the centre while the investigation continues.
Identity protected by law
Authorities cannot publish the girl’s identity or any information that could identify her. The girl is 12 years and eight months old.
Fight between schoolgirls sparked the accusation
The incident allegedly took place on August 5 at around 1.30 pm at a school on Phuket. It reportedly started with a quarrel where the girls accused each other of gossiping.
Six girls were involved when police arrived. Four attended the school. Two came from outside.
Student reported injuries
The 14-year-old Thai who was allegedly attacked suffered several injuries. Doctors estimated they would heal in about two days.
Reports said she had bruises around her left eye and on her left arm, plus a scraped knee.
Police initially recorded the incident. Both sides agreed to mediation, and the accused girl’s parents offered to pay 3,000 baht in compensation.
Video led to official complaint
A video of the incident later spread on social media. The injured student’s mother then filed a formal police complaint.
Police formally notified the 12-year-old of the accusation on August 10. A prosecutor from the Phuket Provincial Prosecutor’s Office, a psychologist, and a person requested by the child were present.
Police give reasons for further detention
Investigators presented the court with their grounds, the necessity, and the evidence for the requested detention. Police said the girl’s behaviour could pose a serious danger to others.
As another reason, officers stated that both the mother and father had lost their jobs. The court also checked whether the girl legally counts as a child under suspicion and whether the accusation and her treatment meet legal requirements.
Possible extensions
If the investigation is not finished after 30 days, police can request further detention orders. Each extension may last up to 15 days.
Such requests are allowed a maximum of two times under the specified procedure. After the final conclusion of the case, the girl is to be handed over to the immigration authority, which will decide on possible measures under current laws.
