Amphoe Huai Mek, Kalasin – Red shirts, cloth and umbrellas now cover almost every house in several villages. Locals believe the colour keeps the widow ghost away after two sudden deaths sparked terror.
Drive through the subdistricts of Hua Hin and Bueng Na Riang and you see red paint on doorways, pillars, stairs and trees. Shirts, pants, fabric strips and umbrellas have hung there for weeks. Some have faded to pale pink, others still glow bright red.
In villages Nong No 3 and Nong No 7 the phenomenon is overwhelming. Every resident gives the same answer: this is protection against the widow ghost woman. What looks like folk custom has a very concrete and dark trigger.
Two sudden deaths as the trigger
About two months ago rumours started. In the neighbouring tambon two men died suddenly at night one after the other – locally called Lai Tai. The news spread fast and set off a collective memory of the widow ghost.
The belief from the Isan region says the spirit takes men as life partners. The sudden unexplained deaths fit the pattern perfectly for many. That conviction was enough to change village life.
Nightmares and eerie dog barking
Lert Phutom, 73, from village 7 said he woke up in terror around the same time. Dogs all over the village barked and howled like he had never heard before. In his dream two young women appeared – he felt it right away: widow ghost women.
They tried to trick and seduce me into going with them. I refused, but the dreams came back. Only when I hung red clothes in front of my house did the nightmares and the dog barking stop abruptly.

The colour red drives the ghost away
Tradition says the widow ghost fears the colour red. That simple logic took hold even stronger after Lert’s experience. Other residents followed and also hung up red items.
Since then no man in the village or surrounding area has died that way. For the majority of residents the connection is clear: the red cloth works as a talisman. The belief has been cemented further.
Young and old alike feel unsafe
Not just older people reach for red cloth. Children and teenagers also fear the rumours and hang red shirts or umbrellas to feel safer. The practice now spans all ages.
Even residents who do not believe in the supernatural join in. They see no harm in it and prefer to be safe. The red symbols work more like a collective calming device in that logic.
Quiet village life under red symbols
The mood is unusually quiet, only small groups talk with each other. Daily life and farm work continue, but the red signal in front of almost every house is impossible to miss. Some cloths are already bleaching in the sun.
Residents live on as normal amid the red symbols. In their eyes the risk has not vanished but is controlled by visible precaution. That way the widow ghost stays out.
