PHUKET, Thailand – The Interior Ministry has launched a significant crackdown on suspected shell companies operating within Phuket’s vibrant tourism industry.
An investigation by a special committee is now scrutinizing 159 tourism companies believed to be acting as front firms. Legal proceedings have already commenced against 39 entities, and another 34 have been ordered to divest their shares. A joint press conference with the Department of Lands is scheduled for July 2nd or 3rd to provide further clarity on the operation.
Committee in Full Swing
Deputy Interior Minister Polapee Suwanchawee made it clear that 159 companies suspected of acting as nominees in Phuket’s tourism sector have been handed over to the examination committee. An additional 200 firms are expected to be thoroughly investigated shortly. The ministry representatives are moving with urgency, with Polapee anticipating an update on the operation’s progress this week. The message to the industry is unambiguous: individuals acting as nominees face significant consequences.
Legal Offensive Against Nominees
The pressure is now directly felt by 39 companies, against which the ministry has already initiated legal action. While the specific accusations remain somewhat vague, the ministry’s effort to dismantle nominee structures appears firm. Furthermore, 34 other businesses have received a clear directive to sell their stakes. This demonstrates the ministry’s firm stance, indicating these actions are not mere announcements.
Dual Visit in Two Weeks
Polapee Suwanchawee announced that he, along with Deputy Interior Minister Worasit Liangprasit, will visit Phuket again in approximately two weeks. The two senior officials intend to personally observe the campaign’s impact on the ground. The anticipated press conference with the Department of Lands is slated for July 2nd or 3rd, promising details on ongoing procedures and upcoming investigation phases. The situation is expected to remain tense for the affected companies.
