BANGKOK, THAILAND – Incumbent governor Chadchart Sittipunt has declared a landslide victory in the Bangkok gubernatorial election. Following unofficial results, he secured an overwhelming lead with approximately 1.444 million votes, nearly five times that of his closest rival. The capital has thus given him a clear mandate for a second term, although official confirmation from the election commission is still pending.

With 89.86 percent of counted votes, Chadchart was at an insurmountable lead on Sunday evening. His strongest competitor, Mallika Boonmeetrakool Mahasuk, garnered only 288,171 votes. The engineer and former transport minister managed to increase his vote share from approximately 51 percent in the 2022 election to an unofficial around 64 percent.
In 2022, he ran with the slogan “Bangkok, a livable city for all” and secured 1,386,215 votes as an independent candidate. It now appears his policies are meeting with broader approval than ever before.

The governor also confirmed a congratulatory call from Chaiwat Sathawornwichit, the People’s Party candidate. Chaiwat offered suggestions on early childhood development and flood protection. Chadchart signaled his willingness to engage, saying, “Everyone is an ally.”

His first priority, after official confirmation, will be to translate his over 260 campaign promises into a strategic plan. An urgent program for the first hundred days aims to tackle the city’s most pressing issues. Flood control and traffic are at the top of the list, as are transparency and anti-corruption.
The administration is under pressure to finally deliver far-reaching improvements in areas such as drainage, public transport, waste management, green spaces, health, and safety. Voters will now measure him by the progress of his first four years in office.

Chadchart Sittipunt is a trained civil engineer who first made a name for himself as a transport specialist. Under former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, he served as deputy minister and later minister of transport before entering the race for governor as an independent.
