PHANG NGA, Thailand – Authorities in southern Thailand have launched a sweeping crackdown on illegal nominee operations and dubious company deals, targeting 174 businesses suspected of using Thai individuals to mask foreign ownership. The coordinated raids, involving over 16 government agencies, were spearheaded by Governor Phairat Phetchayuan and Police Major General Chaikiat Wiriyasatikul in the Takua Thung and Thai Mueang districts.
Two Months of Surveillance Lead to Swift Raids
This significant action against criminal networks was the culmination of two months of intensive intelligence gathering. Investigators meticulously collected information, monitored suspects, and secured evidence. The multi-agency task force then obtained search warrants, enabling simultaneous strikes at numerous locations.
Foreign Executive Arrested Without Work Permit
During the operations, several individuals were apprehended. These arrests included a foreign executive in Thai Mueang who was found to be working without a valid work permit. Additionally, hotels operating without the necessary licenses were uncovered, prompting police to thoroughly examine financial records, shareholder structures, and extensive business networks.
Why Authorities Are Taking a Hard Stance
The raids were executed under direct orders from Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, aiming to protect Thailand’s economic interests. The primary focus is on companies that falsely use local individuals as nominee shareholders to circumvent legal restrictions on foreign ownership. Authorities state these nominee practices distort fair competition, deny opportunities to local entrepreneurs, and harm the livelihoods of Thai workers.
15 High-Risk Cases Under Investigation
Police Major General Chaikiat emphasized that the task force systematically built cases against the nominee networks, with the current raids marking only the beginning of further action. A total of 174 companies in Phang Nga are under scrutiny. Of these, investigators have identified 15 high-risk cases for immediate, in-depth examination.
