PHUKET, THAILAND – Authorities are planning a substantial expansion of Highway 402 to address the long-standing traffic issues on the island.
The daily struggle on Phuket’s sole access road is slated to end, as authorities plan a massive expansion of Highway 402 between the Sarasin Bridge and the Tha Chatchai Checkpoint. An extensive 15-month study has commenced, though funding for the construction equipment is still a distant prospect.
The Island’s Only Artery to Be Widened
This highway is the lifeline of Phuket, connecting the popular tourist island to the mainland over a 2.3-kilometer stretch. As the number of vehicles continues to grow unabated, commuters and tourists regularly face severe traffic jams.
The Department of Highways is now seriously considering widening the section to at least four lanes. The aim is to alleviate traffic flow and significantly enhance safety for everyone entering and exiting the island.
15 Months of Study Marathon
Before any cost framework can be established, engineers began a comprehensive study in March of this year. This detailed assessment is expected to last precisely 15 months, concluding in June 2027.
The undertaking is considerable, involving technical surveys, intricate bridge and drainage planning, and improvements to intersections. A thorough environmental impact assessment is also a mandatory requirement.
Where Mangroves Meet Asphalt
The route traverses sensitive terrain, with planners issuing an urgent warning that the path cuts through mangrove and coastal areas. This necessitates an extremely careful and detailed examination.
Local communities are also under close scrutiny. Experts have stressed that areas such as communities, schools, temples, mosques, and kindergartens in Tha Chatchai and Ban Tha Nun require special consideration.
Residents to Have Their Say
To determine the most effective solution to the traffic chaos, the highway department is evaluating several options. Among these are a four-lane road with a raised median or a design featuring a lowered median and elevated road sections.
Before a final blueprint is approved, the authorities intend to engage the public extensively. Throughout the study period, public consultations are scheduled, offering Phuket residents an opportunity to voice their opinions.
First Study, Then Payment
This project is a crucial component of the island’s long-term infrastructure plans, aimed at boosting economic growth and its thriving tourism sector. It is clear, however, that no funds will be disbursed until the completion of all preliminary studies and the environmental report.
Former Governor Nirat Pongsitthaworn confirmed this, stating unequivocally that active pursuit of funding for the road expansion will only commence after all preparatory work is finished.
Shake-up in Governor’s Office
Ironically, the senior official who explained the financing strategy has lost his post. Nirat Pongsitthaworn was transferred from the island on Tuesday, midway through the crucial planning phase. Insiders cite a significant dispute with his two deputies as the reason for his dismissal, highlighting an internal power struggle that is now disrupting the leadership of Phuket’s most important road planning initiative.
