BANGKOK, Thailand – Police have arrested a suspected leader of a Nigerian cocaine network in a luxury apartment, seizing drugs and significant assets.
Late on June 9th, drug enforcement officers apprehended a man identified as Patrick, a 36-year-old suspected chief of a Nigerian cocaine operation. The arrest took place in a high-end apartment located on Rama 3 Road in Bangkok. During the operation, police confiscated approximately 18 grams of cocaine, along with cash, a vehicle, and designer goods valued at around 700,000 Baht. The police referred to the operation by the suggestive name, “Clipping the wings of the Dodorima gang leader.”
Backwards into Patrol Officers
The raid occurred around 10 PM. As Patrick drove his car into the underground parking area of the residential building in the Yan Nawa district, officers from the Metropolitan Police Bureau and the ONCB (Office of the Narcotics Control Board) intercepted his vehicle.
However, the suspect did not surrender immediately. Reports indicate he panicked, shifted his car into reverse, and accelerated towards the officers. One officer sustained injuries during this escape attempt. The situation was resolved when law enforcement officers shattered a car window, disabling the engine and apprehending the suspect.
Partial Confession Under Interrogation
Patrick is currently being held at the Bang Phong Phang police station. During interrogation, he provided a partial confession, reportedly admitting to the possession and distribution of cocaine.
He categorically denied the more serious allegations of money laundering. Patrick claimed that all his income was derived from a legitimate fish export business operating between Thailand and Nigeria. He also stated that his group engaged in charitable activities.
Over 380 Million Baht in Circulation
Investigators reportedly do not believe Patrick’s claims of charitable work. They suspect a sophisticated system operating under the guise of legitimate business. The network, known as “Dodorima,” is believed to be an offshoot of the international group known as “NBM of Africa.”
Financial investigations suggest the network operates on a massive scale. It is estimated that the group handled over 380 million Baht in the past year alone. Patrick, who has resided in Thailand for over seven years, is believed to have transferred funds to Nigeria to facilitate the construction of a large villa.
Romance Scam and the Cocaine Trail
This arrest is directly linked to a raid conducted on May 22nd, which targeted a love scamming syndicate in Nonthaburi, resulting in the apprehension of six foreign nationals. During the interrogations of those arrested, a significant connection between romance scams and cocaine trafficking reportedly became apparent.
Initially, Patrick is alleged to have sold narcotics in tourist areas. A crucial piece of evidence for investigators, despite attempts at obfuscation, was the suspect’s own continued cocaine use. He reportedly used this habit to maintain connections with influential individuals.
Seized Treasures and Chat Logs
In addition to the cocaine, Patrick’s luxury possessions have also been confiscated. Officers seized his car, valued at approximately 200,000 Baht, along with nearly 180,000 Baht in cash, 1,900 US dollars, and designer clothing worth 200,000 Baht.
During the search, investigators also discovered incriminating chat logs. Discussions about cocaine users in Thailand were reportedly found within a private group. All confiscated assets have been handed over to the ONCB for safekeeping and further investigation.
Hunt for Masterminds Continues
Police Major General Theeradet Thamsuthee stated that the investigation is far from over. The police will collaborate closely with the ONCB and international authorities to fully trace the financial flows.
Authorities are now focusing on other foreign and Thai accomplices believed to be interwoven with the network. Interestingly, investigators have clarified the meaning of the name “Dodorima,” as explained by Patrick: it simply means “Hello”.
