KALASIN, Thailand – A police operation in a Kalasin province village concluded with a fatality after a man armed with a dangerous weapon confronted officers. The 51-year-old, reportedly known for violent behavior and drug addiction, died from a gunshot fired by a police officer who had fallen during the encounter.
The Man Approached the Distressed Police Officer
At approximately 3 PM, emergency services received a report of a disturbance. A man, described as being in a delusional state and armed with a knife, was seen walking through the village of Kham Si, instilling fear in residents. A patrol from the Nong Kung Si police station was immediately dispatched to the scene.
The officers located the man, identified as 51-year-old Kritsanaphon Phakdikamchon, on a cattle pasture at the edge of the village. The police team, led by Police Chief Inspector Sunthorn Khamphirom, attempted to de-escalate the situation.
Shouts and Threats: The Man Attacked Officers with a Pitchfork
Officers used protective gear and pitchforks in an effort to gain control. They attempted to reason with the man, but he showed no willingness to relinquish his long-handled grass-cutting knife. Despite his repeated movements away from the officers, covering distances of up to 200 meters, his agitation increased rather than subsided.
He then snatched a pitchfork from one of the officers and began swinging it wildly at the police, forcing them to retreat. The confrontation escalated rapidly, leading to the critical moments that followed.
Two Shots in Absolute Self-Defense
The officers backed away to the edge of a pond. It was at this exact spot that Police Chief Inspector Sunthorn lost his balance, stumbled, and fell to the ground. In that instant, the officer discharged his firearm.
The assailant sustained fatal injuries and passed away at the scene. The immediate aftermath saw a thorough examination of the area for evidence. The incident was declared a case of self-defense.
Family of the Deceased: “We Have No Objections”
The deceased’s 79-year-old father, Mr. Somsri, stated that his son had been using drugs and not taking his medication regularly. He described daily visits where his son would demand 50 Baht for drugs, resorting to violence if his demands were not met. The victim’s uncle, Mr. Orot, corroborated that his nephew was experiencing delusions and had previously attacked his own father.
The family expressed no objections to the police actions, acknowledging their nephew’s recurring episodes of aggression. They stated that the deceased’s behavior had become increasingly unpredictable and dangerous.
Village Chief: “He Was a Ticking Time Bomb”
The village chief of Kham Si, Mr. Somphak Anuson, described the deceased as a drug-addicted individual who frequently caused disturbances and attacked others. He was widely considered a dangerous presence in the village. The police had previously taken him to the hospital for treatment on multiple occasions.
However, the man invariably returned to drug use, and no lasting recovery was achieved. The village chief considered his presence a constant threat to the community’s safety and well-being.
Police Chief Orders Comprehensive Review
Police Major General Songphon Boribanprasit, Commander of the Kalasin Provincial Police, has instructed the Nong Kung Si police station to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. A key focus will be to ascertain if the deceased was indeed under the influence of drugs at the time of the confrontation. If confirmed, the police will be tasked with identifying the source of the drugs and prosecuting the dealers involved.
Furthermore, the entire operation, including the officer’s use of a firearm, will be meticulously analyzed by forensic teams, medical professionals, and the public prosecutor’s office. This comprehensive evaluation aims to unequivocally clarify the exact circumstances surrounding the act of self-defense.
