The party’s top officials are emphasizing a clear separation between government responsibilities and party management to quell speculation about the former Prime Minister’s return.
Pheu Thai: Thaksin Stays Out
Senior figures within the Pheu Thai Party declared that Thaksin has withdrawn from active party politics and will not dominate the party’s internal leadership after receiving his pardon. This clarification aims to halt rumors of a political comeback for the former minister now that his legal obligations have been formally concluded.
Deputy Premier Stresses Clear Separation
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Yodchanan Wongsawat, stated that cabinet work and party administration must remain strictly separate. He highlighted that the cabinet holds full authority for governing the country, while party matters should proceed through Pheu Thai’s formal structures and consultation mechanisms.
Party Leader Urges Media Restraint
Minister of Labour and Pheu Thai leader Julapun Amornvivat firmly rejected claims of Thaksin’s renewed influence, urging the media to cease pursuing the subject. He stated:
“There is no external dominance whatsoever.”
Amornvivat also stressed that while the party is happy for Thaksin’s family, it maintains control within its own leadership and ideology. The royal pardon ended Thaksin’s probation on June 3rd, settling his legal obligations related to a prison sentence. Renewed speculation about his political role intensified after this decision, prompting the party leadership’s clarifcations on Thursday, June 4, 2026.
Pheu Thai Relies on Own Structure — Paetongtarn as Advisor
The party emphasized it will continue to operate under its formal structure and consultation system, carrying forward its political direction in the spirit of the Thai Rak Thai era. Paetongtarn Shinawatra serves as an advisor within this framework.
