BANGKOK, THAILAND – A clash between rival teenage motorcycle groups in Thonburi turned deadly on the night of 21 March, leaving one 15-year-old dead and two others critically injured.
Confrontation in Soi Charoen Nakhon
The incident took place at the entrance of Soi Charoen Nakhon 57/1, where several rival groups on motorcycles had gathered and the situation escalated. Local residents called the police to report a brawl.
Officers from Samre Police Station arrived to find a 15-year-old lying dead at the scene and two other teenagers of the same age seriously injured. The injured youths were taken to hospital, where both were admitted in critical condition.
Victim: 15-year-old killed, two injured
The boy who died, Pichaphop (nickname “Jim”), was a ninth-grade student who also worked selling second-hand clothes at markets and via Facebook to help support his family. According to the report, he combined school with this part-time work.
Two other 15-year-olds suffered severe injuries and were transported to hospital. Medical staff described their condition on admission as critical.
Forensic work and evidence
Investigators secured a grey motorcycle with registration from Samut Sakhon, along with several helmets and other items believed to belong to those involved. These objects were collected at the crime scene for further analysis.
Which pieces of evidence were directly linked to the killing was still being assessed at the time of reporting. The material formed part of an ongoing forensic evaluation.
Eyewitness describes the sequence
A nearby food vendor saw dozens of teenagers arrive on motorcycles, gather in front of the alley and start a physical fight. Shortly afterwards, he heard two gunshots.
He then watched as the group scattered and fled in the direction of the Bukkhalo intersection. The scene emptied quickly after the shots.
Victim’s family
The victim’s father, Santipap, spoke to local media about his son.
“He was a student who, alongside school, helped fund the family by selling used clothing.”
said Santipap, the boy’s father.
According to the father, his son had no prior history of fights or involvement in gangs.
“My son did not have a background in conflicts or gang activities.”
said Santipap.
Police review CCTV footage
Police began examining CCTV footage from the area around the crime scene on 22 March to identify those involved. They collected recordings from cameras covering nearby streets and access points.
By the time of publication, there were no reports of arrests or clearly identified suspects. The investigation remained ongoing.
Night-time youth gatherings – a known phenomenon
In Thailand, as in other countries, teenagers often gather at night with modified motorcycles on streets and parking lots. Most of the time, such meetups involve showing off and loud engines.
However, when rival groups meet, conflicts can escalate. Authorities in several major cities have classified the issue as a recurring public safety concern, but have not yet implemented lasting countermeasures.
Relevance for tourist centres such as Pattaya
Similar night-time gatherings are also known in tourist destinations such as Pattaya, including on beach roads, in front of convenience stores and in side streets away from main tourist areas. These spots can attract groups of young riders.
Tourists are rarely the direct target of such conflicts, but may find themselves nearby when large groups form and a situation spirals out of control. Officials have noted that such risks add to broader safety considerations in popular holiday areas.
