SAMUT PRAKAN, THAILAND – A night-time truck crash brought down more than 70 power poles, plunging parts of the province into darkness and disruption.
Truck snags power lines at 1 a.m.
Around 1 a.m. on 30 January 2026, a container truck near the Bang Pu industrial area became entangled in overhead power lines. The force of the vehicle had been too great for the network to withstand.
One pole after another gave way, and more than 70 power poles toppled along a two‑kilometre stretch from the curve in front of Samut Songkhram Hospital to Nuan Net alley.
“It looked as if someone was knocking over a row of matchsticks,”
said a shocked eyewitness.
Driver on route for the first time
According to police, the driver had been using the route for the first time and failed to see the power lines in the dark. His heavily loaded trailer became caught in the wires.
The immense pulling force of the truck was enough to bring down the entire system in a chain reaction. Despite the scale of the incident, there had been no injuries or deaths, and traffic on Sukhumvit Road remained largely unaffected.
Thousands left without electricity
The blackout hit numerous households and businesses without warning, bringing life in the affected neighbourhoods to a standstill. The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) immediately deployed all available teams to the scene.
“We are working flat out on restoration,”
said the authority. Some areas already had power back, but damage to poles and infrastructure had been extensive and was expected to take days to fully repair.
Million-baht damage and long repairs
Repair costs were expected to reach into the millions of baht, with new poles required and kilometres of cable needing replacement. The MEA asked residents for patience and apologised for the inconvenience.
Restoring full service remained a major logistical challenge. For many businesses, the outage meant tangible economic losses as refrigeration failed, computers went silent and machinery stood idle.
Liability and legal consequences
The key question now was who would bear the cost of the multimillion‑baht damage, with the transport company’s insurer likely to be held responsible. Police launched an investigation on suspicion of negligent property damage.
The driver was expected to face a heavy fine and the possible loss of his professional licence. A small oversight in the darkness had triggered a large‑scale incident and plunged an entire urban area into night‑time chaos.
