BANGKOK, THAILAND – A defective electrical appliance triggered a dangerous condominium fire in Wang Thonglang district, where a young woman was rescued unconscious from a smoke-filled apartment.
Fire contained after midday emergency call
Emergency services were alerted at around 12:15 p.m. on 2 January 2026, when a blaze broke out in a unit of a six-storey condo on Ladprao Road. Police from Chokchai station, firefighters from the Huamark station and volunteers from the Ruam Katanyu Foundation rushed to the scene as thick black smoke poured from a fourth-floor window. Residents were quickly evacuated, and crews advanced towards the source of the fire, bringing the flames under control within minutes.
Young woman hospitalized after severe smoke inhalation
Rescuers found two injured people inside the affected apartment, including a 21-year-old woman who had lost consciousness due to smoke inhalation. Police officers carried her out of the building while paramedics provided initial treatment before rushing her to Rajavithi Hospital.
“She is being treated and is under observation.”
said hospital representatives, noting that her condition initially caused serious concern.
Second resident lightly injured by broken glass
A second resident, a man, suffered a cut to his right finger while attempting to fight the fire after coming into contact with broken glass. Volunteers from the Ruam Katanyu Foundation treated his wound on site and later transported him to Ladprao Hospital. His injuries were classified as minor, and the swift response by firefighters was credited with preventing a larger disaster.
Short circuit in air conditioner suspected as cause
Fire investigators carried out an initial inspection and pointed to an electrical short circuit in the compressor of the apartment’s air conditioner as the likely cause. The defect reportedly ignited nearby clothing, allowing the fire to spread briefly through the room before being extinguished. The damage area was estimated at only about two square metres, but officials stressed that the resulting smoke could still have been deadly.
Police underline risks of faulty appliances
Police said the investigation would continue to confirm the exact cause, while authorities urged residents to take personal safety precautions seriously.
“Electrical devices and wiring should be checked regularly,”
said an officer, adding that this was especially important during periods of heavy use. Officials described the incident as a dramatic warning that a simple defect could turn into a life-threatening trap within seconds.
Experts call for regular maintenance and alarms
Experts recommended regular servicing of older air conditioners and other high-powered electrical appliances, and cautioned against overloading sockets. They emphasized that smoke detectors in apartments can be lifesaving because they provide early warnings, even during sleep. In the event of a fire, they advised that smoke is more dangerous than flames, and residents should leave the room immediately, close the door behind them and call the fire service on emergency number 199.
