UDON THANI, THAILAND – A religious road trip ended in tragedy when a private van carrying pilgrims veered off a rural road and slammed into a tree, killing one man and injuring eight others.
Pilgrims’ journey cut short by violent crash
The accident occurred at about 1:50 p.m. on 2 January 2026 on the road between Ban Nai Yom and Ban Don Kloi in Phibun Rak district. The van left the carriageway and crashed head-on into a large tree. Rescuers from Phibun Rak Hospital arrived to find the vehicle heavily deformed with all nine occupants trapped in the wreckage.
One dead, several in critical condition
Emergency crews used spreaders and cutters to free the passengers before rushing them to nearby hospitals. Three people were reported to be in critical condition, and Mr. Thiang Mokhom later died despite intensive medical treatment. The remaining eight victims were treated for injuries of varying severity, while authorities continued to verify the identities of everyone involved.
Religious trip from Surin ends in disaster
Initial findings indicated the group originally came from Surin province and had been staying with relatives in Udon Thani. They had set off from Ban Khao Wua in Nong Han district on what appeared to be a religious journey. Their destination was Wat Pa Dong Nong Tan temple, where they intended to pray and seek blessings.
Tire blowout suspected as key cause
Witness accounts and early investigations pointed to a sudden tire failure on the van. After the tire reportedly burst, the driver lost control, sending the vehicle off the road and into the tree at high speed. The force of the impact was described as devastating.
“The occupants were trapped immediately,”
said a rescue worker.
Police examine vehicle condition and speed
Police sealed off the crash site and launched detailed investigations into the circumstances of the accident. Officers were checking not only the precise cause of the tire damage, but also the overall condition of the vehicle, the speed at which it had been travelling and the local road conditions. The driver was being questioned as part of the inquiry.

Officials used the fatal crash to reiterate safety warnings for private transport. They stressed that tire condition must be checked carefully before long journeys. Extra caution was urged on rural roads with poor lighting and obstacles close to the roadside, where even a minor technical defect can plunge several families into deep grief.
