BANGKOK, THAILAND – Cambodia abruptly withdrew its entire delegation from the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand due to escalating clashes along the shared border.
Night-time decision to pull entire delegation
Shortly after 2 a.m. on 10 December, Vath Chamroen, secretary-general of the Cambodian Olympic Committee, notified the organisers of the decision. The committee cited warnings about worsening conditions at the border and fears that the situation could spread, stating that security concerns were too severe. An official letter of withdrawal followed, formally confirming the move.
Families’ fears drive urgent return
In the withdrawal letter, the committee pointed to the fears of athletes’ relatives as a key reason for the decision.
“Due to serious concerns and at the request of the families of our athletes to bring their relatives home immediately,”
said the committee in its statement. The Cambodian delegation expressed gratitude for Thai hospitality and apologised for any inconvenience, stressing that the safety of the sportsmen and women had been given priority.
From celebrated opening to sudden exit
As recently as Tuesday, 30 Cambodian athletes had received enthusiastic applause during the opening ceremony. Cambodia had originally planned to compete in all sports, but the delegation had already been cut back to 12 sports because of the tense situation. In total, 137 athletes and officials travelled to Thailand and now all had to return home ahead of schedule.
Founding member’s absence reshapes the Games
The withdrawal reduced the number of participating countries from eleven to ten. The Games in Bangkok and Chonburi were therefore held without one of the founding members of the event. The Southeast Asian Games had been intended as a symbol of regional peace and unity, but that ambition was now shattered.
Political realities overshadow sporting goals
Although the competition venues lay hundreds of kilometres from the contested border, political tensions overtook the sporting agenda.
“The decision has dampened hopes that the Games would serve as a platform for regional peace,”
said an official spokesperson. It marked a low point in Thai-Cambodian relations, with sport becoming a victim of a broader political crisis.
Games continue with ten nations
The competitions continued with ten participating nations, while organisers had to rapidly adjust schedules and formats where Cambodian athletes were missing. Images of the departing team were expected to endure as a symbol of the rift between the neighbours. Medals became secondary as the focus shifted to security, diplomacy and the fragility of regional unity.
