BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thai police arrested a 35-year-old suspected murderer near the capital’s main railway station after a weeks-long search across provincial borders.
Burned body in Sakon Nakhon triggered nationwide search
Residents in the northeastern province of Sakon Nakhon discovered a burned body in bushes along the Phang Khon–Wanon Niwat Road. The victim was identified as 46-year-old Sithidon, also known as “Jae Sithi,” an LGBTQ person originally from Bueng Kan. A court in Sawang Daen Din issued an arrest warrant on 29 November on charges of murder and illegal possession of weapons.
Arrest near Bangkok canal and main station
Investigators later traced the suspect to Bangkok, where a tip led the fourth investigation command to Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem near Hua Lamphong railway station. A team from the Metropolitan Police and Pathumwan Police Station encountered the wanted man, identified as Nichthawan, on 5 December and he cooperated with the arrest. He confirmed his identity and stated that he was the person named in arrest warrant No. 241/2568, while officers found a 25-centimetre-long knife on his hip.
Recently released after 13-year sentence
Investigations revealed that the detainee had only recently completed a 13-year prison sentence for murder and robbery. He had been free for just five months before coming under strong suspicion of a new killing, raising concern about serious repeat offending. Police stated that this was his first arrest in connection with the latest, particularly brutal case.
Next legal steps and additional charges
The alleged perpetrator was handed over to the responsible investigators, who informed him of all legal guarantees during the arrest. The case was to be pursued further by the investigation team of Pathumwan Police Station in Bangkok, where the evidence reportedly appeared clear. In addition to the murder allegation, Nichthawan also faced proceedings over carrying the weapon in public without a valid reason.
Questions over rehabilitation and possible hate motive
The case raised fundamental questions about the security system and post-release supervision. How someone previously convicted of murder could so quickly become strongly suspected again prompted debate over gaps in rehabilitation or monitoring. The killing of a member of the LGBTQ community also pointed to the possibility of a hate crime, which investigators were expected to examine alongside the full clarification of his motives.
Cross-provincial operation seen as success
Despite the tragic background, authorities presented the arrest as a success for Thai law enforcement. The cross-border cooperation between police units functioned from the discovery of the body to the seizure of the suspect within roughly a week. Officials saw the rapid resolution as an important signal to the public that confidence in police work could be maintained even in particularly brutal and complex crimes.
