Mother charged with murder in Udon Thani

Years of conflict over drugs and relationships ended in a fatal stabbing in a family home

UDON THANI, THAILAND – Police in northeastern Thailand reported that a 52-year-old mother fatally stabbed her daughter after a prolonged family dispute over drugs and a new relationship.

Fatal stabbing discovered in bathroom

Emergency services were alerted around 11:30 a.m. on 4 December, when a call reached Nong Saeng Police Station about a serious incident in the Saeng Sawang area. Officers and rescue workers found the 36-year-old victim dead in the ground-floor bathroom of a two-storey house, her body covered with a pink towel. A pointed kitchen knife believed to be the murder weapon lay in front of the bathroom door and was secured at the scene, while the mother, visibly under the influence of drugs, immediately confessed.

Household marked by drugs and long-term conflict

During questioning, the 52-year-old described a troubled household in which she lived with her 93-year-old mother and her widowed daughter, who was also a widow. She told police that her daughter struggled with methamphetamine use and that she had previously reported her to authorities in the hope this would lead to treatment. The relationship reportedly deteriorated further when the daughter introduced a new boyfriend, a man known locally for past drug involvement, which deepened the mother’s fears for her daughter’s future.

Violent escalation after alcohol and arguments

According to the investigation, tensions in the house flared repeatedly, especially when alcohol was involved. Four days before the killing, the daughter allegedly expelled her mother’s boyfriend from the home, leading to a fight in which she hit him with a chair. On the night before the stabbing, the daughter brought her new boyfriend back to the house, which authorities described as the final spark in the ongoing conflict.

Mother says she lost control during bathroom dispute

On the morning of 4 December, another argument reportedly broke out as the daughter was about to take a shower. The mother told officers she “lost control,” grabbed the knife and stabbed her daughter in the bathroom. After the attack, she expressed remorse and said she wished her daughter had heeded her warnings, but accepted that she now had to take responsibility for what she had done.

Positive drug test and criminal charges

Police said a subsequent drug test on the suspect returned positive for methamphetamine, a result she admitted to. Investigators charged the 52-year-old with murder and drug use, and she was placed in pre-trial detention. The victim’s body was sent for autopsy as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Neighbors describe swings between affection and violence

A neighbor gave officers an account of a household marked by extremes, saying the family was known for loud arguments when they had been drinking. When sober, however, they were described as caring and affectionate toward one another. On the morning of the crime, the mother reportedly came to the neighbor in tears and confessed,

“I have killed my daughter.”

said the neighbor.

Community shaken by killing in family home

Residents later discovered the body, turning what had appeared to be an idyllic home into the scene of what locals called an unimaginable crime. Community members viewed the case as a stark example of the destructive combination of drug dependency, alcohol abuse and long-running family disputes. Authorities said the courts would now have to determine guilt and punishment in a case where, as investigators noted, perpetrator and victim were bound together in a particularly tragic way.
