PATTAYA, THAILAND – A spot check on the ground challenged widespread online claims that the beach city had become unaffordable for tourists.
Online complaints versus local reality
Headlines had circulated for months alleging that Thailand in general, and Pattaya in particular, were now too expensive. However, the local review found that extreme cases, such as a bill of 1,000 baht for three noodles, a beer and a coconut, were rare exceptions rather than the rule.

said local residents, who pointed to street food, local markets and mini-bars still offering prices similar to those before the pandemic.
Price shock shifts to island resorts
While criticism focused on Pattaya, the report noted that a green coconut in some Koh Samui resorts cost about 200 baht, and that a relaxed evening on the island easily exceeded typical going-out costs in Pattaya. Across Thailand, prices varied widely, but Pattaya was described as rarely topping the expensive list.
According to the account, Samui and Phuket were significantly pricier, with luxury hotspots in Bangkok adding to the country’s high-end spectrum. In comparison, Pattaya was portrayed as something of a bargain destination.
Perception and choices drive complaints
Long-stay visitors reportedly said that the core issue was not price levels but where tourists chose to spend their money. Many visitors were said to focus only on glossy, upscale districts and to pay premium prices for drinks and experiences, overlooking a wealth of cheaper alternatives.

Currency, home inflation and regional competition
The strong Thai baht was acknowledged as a factor, but not the main driver of dissatisfaction. Western tourists often felt the real shock only after returning home, where high inflation and interest rates further eroded their travel budgets.
Countries such as Vietnam and Cambodia were cited as competitors with lower prices. Even so, Pattaya was said to continue offering competitive rates for accommodation, food and transport.
Affordable options off the main tourist track
The report suggested that visitors willing to leave the main resort zones could easily find budget-friendly options. Street food stalls, family-run restaurants and small guesthouses were described as plentiful.
Pattaya was depicted as a city where travellers could combine affordability with comfort, provided they were prepared to look beyond resort strips. For those exploring outside the most expensive areas, the city remained far removed from its “too expensive” image and instead depended on knowing where to look.
