Finnish Tourist Critically Injured in Hotel Fall

Police in Udon Thani investigate a mysterious fourth-floor fall involving a 21-year-old visitor.

UDON THANI, THAILAND – A 21-year-old Finnish man is in critical condition after plunging from a fourth-floor hotel balcony in central Udon Thani late on November 14, 2025.

The incident occurred around 23:30 on Prajak Silpakorn Road, where emergency responders from Udon Thani Hospital and the Promprom Foundation discovered Vesa Mikko Juhani Vertara lying unconscious outside the hotel entrance.

“Both legs broken, severe head injuries,”

said a first responder from the Promprom Foundation.

Family in Shock

According to police interviews, Vertara was traveling with his father, Mikko Samuli Vertara, 50, and stepmother, Weeranuch, 32, who were visiting her hometown. The family had checked into adjacent rooms, 405 and 406, before the fall.

“We separated after dinner to our rooms 405 and 406,”

said Weeranuch, stepmother.

Medics transported Vertara to Bangkok-Udon Thani Hospital, where he remained conscious but severely injured. His parents immediately joined emergency staff at the facility.

Mystery Surrounding the Fall

Investigators from the Udon Thani police are examining all evidence from room 406 and have collected statements from the relatives. According to family accounts, the young man had received money from his father shortly before the fall.

“He had definitely not been drinking alcohol,”

said Weeranuch, stepmother.

Police and Tourist Support

The tourist police unit confirmed coordination between investigative and medical teams.

“We are coordinating the medical care and the investigation,”

said a police officer involved in the case.

Officers are now reviewing the hotel’s CCTV footage for the minutes leading up to the incident. Authorities said the cause of the fall remained undetermined as of November 17, 2025.

Critical Condition

Doctors at the Bangkok-Udon Thani Hospital continued surgeries and neurological treatment following suspected traumatic brain injury. Hospital officials reported that Vertara’s condition was life-threatening, and the next 24 hours would be decisive.

Family members stayed at the hospital awaiting news while local authorities monitored developments. Police stated the investigation would continue until all witness interviews and forensic reviews were complete.
