Hua Hin, Thailand – A Mercedes-Benz GLC43 owned by two American tourists burst into flames on October 23, 2025, outside a Bangchak petrol station on Phetkasem Road, forcing a rapid evacuation and a half-hour firefight to prevent a wider disaster.
Scene and escape
The incident began at about 15:30 when the tourists, who had been driving from Cha-am to Hua Hin, noticed smoke under the vehicle’s hood after roughly 30 minutes on the road. The driver pulled the car to a stop on the southbound lane in front of the Bangchak station and both occupants jumped clear just seconds before flames erupted from the engine bay.
A station employee attempted to tackle the blaze with a hand extinguisher but was driven back by intense heat as black smoke and loud detonations rose hundreds of metres into the air. Police said the quick reactions of the driver and the attendant helped avert casualties.
Fire response and risk
Two Hua Hin fire engines arrived and fought the blaze for about 30 minutes. Fire crews worked to contain the inferno while police cordoned off the area and halted traffic because of the proximity of fuel pumps a few metres from the burning SUV — a situation authorities said could have produced a far worse outcome.
When the flames were finally brought under control only a charred wreck remained; the luxury SUV was described as unrecognisable. Authorities estimated the loss at about 3 million baht (roughly 75,000 euros).
Investigation
Preliminary enquiries suggested an electrical fault might have sparked the fire, police said, and investigators dismissed the possibility of foul play. “There are no signs of tampering or deliberate arson,” a police spokesperson said.
Mercedes-Benz Thailand and independent experts were being invited to examine the vehicle to determine the precise cause. Officials noted that if a technical defect is confirmed it could have implications for other vehicles of the same model.

Authorities praised the composure of the driver and the quick actions of the petrol station employee for preventing injuries and a potentially catastrophic escalation. The case underlines concerns about vehicle fires and the risks posed when they occur near fuel infrastructure, and it will be followed closely as investigators and manufacturers complete their inspections.
