THAILAND – Two separate investigations in northern Thailand and along the Myanmar border revealed criminal networks that coerced children into serving as tools for financial crime and sexual exploitation.
Northern fraud ring used minors as account mules
Police in Chiang Rai arrested three 19-year-olds in the districts of Chiang Saen and Mae Sai after uncovering a scheme in which minors were forced to open bank accounts for use in online fraud. The suspects, identified as Ms. Waralee, Mr. Khajorn and Ms. Witchayaporn, recruited children to register accounts in exchange for about 3,000 baht (roughly $92) per account.
Those accounts were later sold to gambling and call-centre networks for up to 30,000 baht (about $920), and authorities said the operation laundered millions of baht each month. Ms. Witchayaporn, described by investigators as part of an aggressive online recruitment effort, admitted the gang targeted minors specifically to circumvent tightened bank controls.
Minors face legal fallout
Many of the children whose names were used to open accounts subsequently received police summonses after their accounts were linked to fraudulent activity. Cyber Crime Investigation Division 4 said it was expanding the probe to identify the network’s backers and financiers and to dismantle the wider operation.
“We are expanding the investigation to identify the network’s leaders and financiers,” authorities said, warning that criminal groups increasingly target impoverished children who may be lured by quick cash.
Cross-border trafficking of schoolgirls
In a separate case, two schoolgirls aged 13 and 14 were rescued from a karaoke bar in Myanmar where they had been handed over to Chinese customers for sexual services. Investigators said the girls were forced to work nightly from about 8 p.m. until 3 a.m.
The girls were able to contact their families clandestinely, and relatives paid 8,000 baht (about $245) to secure their release. The families then filed a complaint with Thailand’s Anti-Human Trafficking Division.
Arrests and charges in trafficking case
The trafficking investigation led to the arrest of a suspect, 59-year-old Mr. Aphinop, in Mae Sot, Tak province. He was charged with child prostitution, trafficking minors under 15 years old and abduction for indecent purposes, according to prosecutors.
Together, the two cases highlight a disturbing trend in which organised criminal groups exploit children both as instruments of financial crime and as victims of sexual exploitation across borders.
Authorities urge vigilance
Thai authorities appealed to parents, teachers and community leaders to be alert to offers that promise easy money, and to educate children about the risks posed by recruitment efforts. Officials said prevention and early intervention were essential because the gangs were becoming more inventive and their victims ever younger.
