Royal Setting for Diplomatic Dialogue
A significant diplomatic event unfolded at the Royal Cliff Resort in Pattaya on October 3rd: Swiss Ambassador Pedro Zwahlen met with representatives of the Swiss expatriate community to address the concerns of the approximately 10,000 Swiss citizens living in Thailand. The discussions focused on healthcare, infrastructure, and overall quality of life.
Strengthening Ties in a Prestigious Venue
Swiss clubs and associations from Chonburi and Pattaya hosted a reception for His Excellency Ambassador Zwahlen and his delegation. The Royal Cliff Resort provided an ideal backdrop for talks aimed at deepening cooperation on diplomatic, economic, and tourism-related matters.
Ambassador Zwahlen highlighted the importance of the Swiss population in Thailand—primarily concentrated in Pattaya and Chonburi—and also acknowledged the roughly 30,000 Thais living in Switzerland, organized into 22 different communities.
Thailand’s Ambition as a Medical Hub
A key topic was Thailand’s ambition to become an international medical center. Switzerland is actively supporting this initiative, helping to position Thailand as a prime destination for health tourism.
“We are working to improve healthcare services for our citizens in Thailand,” one participant noted. The Swiss community benefits from Pattaya’s high-quality medical facilities, which meet international standards.
Pattaya’s Growing International Appeal
The discussions underscored Pattaya’s rising status as a cosmopolitan city with a high quality of life. Not only Swiss nationals, but expats from around the world appreciate the city’s infrastructure, excellent dining, and diverse leisure opportunities.
Ambassador Zwahlen inquired about the everyday challenges faced by his compatriots—from dealing with local authorities and finding housing to integrating into Thai society. The clubs shared their experiences and proposed concrete improvements.
A Win-Win for Both Nations
This meeting marks an important step in Thai-Swiss relations. Both countries benefit from this exchange: Thai communities in Switzerland enrich local culture, while Swiss expats in Thailand contribute to economic development.
The Swiss Embassy plans to continue these discussions and implement specific measures to support its citizens in Eastern Thailand. One thing is certain: Pattaya remains a hotspot for the Swiss community.
