Bangkok police warn: iris scan scam hits shopping malls
Bangkok – A chilling new fraud scheme has emerged in Thailand’s shopping malls. Shoppers are being lured with the promise of cryptocurrency rewards worth 500–1,000 baht – but the price is their most personal asset: their iris data.
The Department of Provincial Administration (DOPA) has issued a nationwide warning, ordering village heads to shut down these activities immediately. Equipped with futuristic scanning devices called “orbs,” the scammers convince unsuspecting citizens to stare into the machine in exchange for digital coins. Even more alarming: they offer 500 baht commission for every successful referral.
“Your iris is like an unchangeable password”
Government spokesman Anukool Pruksanusak warns the risks could be catastrophic:
“Unlike passwords, you can’t change your iris. Once stolen, it can be abused forever.”

Global alarm – Thai cyber police on the case
Around the world, countries are moving to strictly regulate the collection of biometric data, given its permanence and potential for misuse. Thailand’s Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) has already launched a probe into the groups behind the scam, which may be tied to international criminal networks.
According to Thailand’s Consumer Council, some victims even reported receiving small crypto payments within 24 hours – a dangerous bait that could drag thousands of Thais into long-term risk.
How to protect yourself
The government strongly urges the public not to trade biometric data for short-term rewards. Suspicious activities should be reported immediately to the Damrongdham Centers of the Interior Ministry or via hotline 1567.
Anukool stressed:
“The potential damage in the future far outweighs the tiny benefits offered. Protecting iris data is not only a matter of personal safety – it is a matter of national cybersecurity.”
