BANGKOK, THAILAND – United Airlines has resumed flights to Bangkok after an 11‑year absence, underscoring a strengthening of travel and economic links between Thailand and the United States.
A water salute for the first touchdown
A United Boeing 787‑9 Dreamliner landed at Suvarnabhumi International Airport around midday on Saturday, 25 October, and was greeted with a traditional water‑cannon ceremony. The aircraft, operating as flight UA820, carried the first passengers on the airline’s newly launched daily service from Los Angeles to Bangkok, routed through Hong Kong.
The return marked the first U.S. airline flight to Thailand since United and Delta Air Lines both withdrew more than a decade ago. The connection, discontinued in 2014, now repositions United as the only American carrier serving the Thai capital.
New daily route and aircraft details
According to the airline’s schedule, the service departs Los Angeles at 23:15 local time, arriving in Bangkok at 11:25 two days later after a stop in Hong Kong. The return flight leaves Bangkok at 16:55 and lands in Los Angeles at 20:25 the same day. The Boeing 787‑9 accommodates 257 passengers across three cabins: Polaris Business Class, Premium Plus, and Economy.
The Hong Kong stop also enables travellers from United’s San Francisco–Hong Kong route to connect onwards to Bangkok, broadening accessibility from multiple U.S. gateways.
Welcome from Thai tourism officials
Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), called the flight’s arrival “a significant milestone in the long‑standing friendship between Thailand and the United States.” She said the renewed route would reinforce bilateral tourism and business relations while meeting what she described as growing American demand for “meaningful experiences” in Thailand.
Rising numbers of U.S. visitors
Visitor statistics highlight the interest she referenced. Between 1 January and 24 October this year, 808,288 travellers from the United States arrived in Thailand, a 5 percent increase compared with the same period last year. The TAT expects total U.S. arrivals to reach 1.09 million by year’s end, generating an estimated 62 billion baht in revenue.
Part of a wider North American resurgence
United’s return coincides with a broader rebound in long‑haul travel from North America. Air Canada has launched a nonstop link from Vancouver to Bangkok, while HBO’s The White Lotus is filming its third season in Thailand—developments that have further elevated the country’s visibility among international audiences.
The resumption of United flights, Thai tourism officials say, reflects renewed confidence in the sector and a symbolic reopening of the skies between two Pacific partners who last shared regular direct service more than a decade ago.
