FAA approval paves way for United Airlines’ bold move
The main breakthrough comes after the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) upgrades Thailand back to Category 1 in April. This crucial decision follows years of safety concerns that had blocked direct flights since 2015.
United Airlines quickly seizes the opportunity, becoming the first carrier to relaunch the lucrative Los Angeles–Bangkok route. The airline will operate the flights with state-of-the-art Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, routing via Hong Kong.
A United spokesperson says, “We’re proud to connect two dynamic cities and make travel easier for our customers.”
Thai Airways hesitates as competition heats up
While United Airlines leads the charge, Thai Airways International remains cautious. CEO Chai Eamsiri confirms that US destinations are not currently in the airline’s expansion plans, citing fierce competition on trans-Pacific routes.
This stance contrasts with recent calls from former Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit, who urged a Thai Airways return to the US to boost Suvarnabhumi Airport’s hub status.
