Typhoon Ragasa Poised to Hit Thailand with Torrential Rains
Thailand is on high alert as Typhoon Ragasa approaches, threatening to amplify the monsoon and trigger extreme weather across the nation. The Meteorological Department has issued warnings of unprecedented rainfall, flooding, and dangerous storm surges from September 23 to 26.
According to Somkuan Tonchan, director of weather forecasting, the typhoon currently rages over the Philippines. As of 4pm on Monday, the storm’s eye was positioned at 19.5°N and 121.1°E, packing winds up to 205 km/h. Ragasa is moving westward at 20 km/h, leaving authorities bracing for its path over the South China Sea.
The Storm’s Path and Expected Impact
Ragasa is expected to skirt past Hong Kong before advancing over southern China and Hainan Island, eventually reaching the Gulf of Tonkin. By September 25–26, the storm could make landfall as a tropical storm over northern Vietnam, gradually weakening thereafter.
While Thailand is not expected to face a direct hit, the storm will dramatically strengthen monsoon patterns. Northern and northeastern provinces, central regions, eastern Thailand, and the Bangkok metropolitan area are all at risk of severe weather.
Monsoon Intensification Brings Dangerous Flooding

Seafarers face the highest danger as small boats in the upper Andaman Sea are advised to stay ashore from September 24–26. Storm conditions could produce waves exceeding 3 meters, making navigation extremely hazardous.
