PATONG, THAILAND – Two separate assaults within a few hours on Bangla Road put a harsh spotlight on violence and safety in the heart of this tourist district.
Vendor injured in dispute over sales spot
A dispute between street vendors on Bangla Road turned violent around 3 a.m. The 33-year-old Piyanut Thaochari had been selling goods in front of a cannabis shop when an argument broke out with 32-year-old vendor Panusaya Wichitkhajee over the sales location. The rivalry over tourist spending escalated, and Piyanut struck her competitor once on the head with a bottle, sending the injured woman to Patong Hospital.
Police examine CCTV footage and witness accounts
A patrol from the Bangla Road unit arrived at the scene at about 3:40 a.m. Officers collected evidence and took witness statements to clarify the course of events and potential penalties.
“We are reviewing the CCTV recordings and questioning those involved,”
said Patong Police, adding that proceedings were ongoing and both women were local traders.
Taxi driver accused of attacking motorcycle courier
Earlier the same night, at around 12:45 a.m., another violent incident was reported. A 22-year-old motorcycle courier, Adul Nikueji, had just dropped off a passenger when he was confronted by a taxi driver who claimed Adul was blocking a motorcycle taxi stand. After a verbal exchange, the taxi driver allegedly kicked and punched the young courier several times, leaving him injured and prompting him to file a complaint.
Medical checks and legal steps underway
In both cases, police first sent the victims to hospital for medical examination. Investigators were instructed to analyse surveillance video and question witnesses in order to build the cases.
“Legal steps will be initiated,”
said official sources, noting that the alleged perpetrators faced possible charges.
Tourist hotspot under pressure over safety
The incidents cast a glaring light on the darker side of Patong, where pressure among service providers and vendors was described as intense. Violence used to secure locations or enforce territorial claims was portrayed as a known problem in the area. For visitors, the security situation was depicted as alarming, while Thai authorities faced mounting pressure to enforce public order on the busy nightlife strip.
