BANGKOK, THAILAND – A routine alcohol checkpoint in Wang Thonglang turned into a major police operation when officers found firearms and large quantities of drugs in a yellow BMW carrying three Vietnamese nationals.
Routine traffic stop escalated within seconds
On the afternoon of 17 January 2026, officers on Pracha Uthit Road carried out standard traffic checks under the direction of Police Lieutenant Colonel Suebsak Phansueb. A yellow BMW without a front license plate drew their attention, and the behaviour of the occupants was described as suspicious. The car was stopped, and what began as a drunk‑driving check changed within seconds.
Weapons and methamphetamine found in the cabin
Behind the wheel and on the front seats sat three Vietnamese men, who were taken into custody. During a search of the vehicle, officers discovered a .38-calibre pistol with six live rounds in the glove compartment. In the centre console, they found nine grams of crystal methamphetamine known locally as “Ice,” and on one of the men a loaded .32-calibre pistol was seized.
Cache of tablets and ketamine in the trunk
Police also secured 250 methamphetamine tablets, commonly referred to as “Yaba.” In the trunk, officers located a brown handbag containing an extensive package of ketamine. According to investigators, the bag held two large, two medium and nine small packets of the synthetic drug, a quantity described as being of industrial scale.
Case becomes priority investigation
All weapons and narcotics were immediately recorded and secured as evidence.
“The situation escalated immediately. This was no longer a normal offence.”
said Suebsak Phansueb, police lieutenant colonel. The discovery prompted the traffic officers to call in the station’s investigation unit on the spot, and the case was treated as a priority.
Possible links to wider criminal networks
Authorities were examining whether the three men were part of a larger criminal network or a foreign crime gang. Their identities were not initially released, and their residency status in Thailand formed part of the ongoing inquiry. Investigators were pursuing leads on the origin of the weapons and drugs and whether the quantities were intended for resale in Bangkok.
Bangkok highlighted as hub in international trade
Police did not rule out further arrests once connections to the criminal underworld were uncovered. The case underscored the activities of international gangs operating in Thailand’s capital, with the route via Vietnam already known to authorities. For police, the interception was a success, but for residents it raised the unsettling question of how much organised crime and international drug trafficking was moving through the city unnoticed.
