BANGKOK, THAILAND – A thick, toxic haze blanketed large parts of the country as authorities warned of a sharp spike in dangerous PM2.5 pollution levels.
Air quality data show hazardous fine dust levels
The national air quality monitoring agency CAPM reported that legal limits for fine dust were significantly exceeded across wide areas of Thailand. Conditions were described as particularly severe in the central and western regions, where concentrations reached up to 68.2 micrograms per cubic meter, a level considered dangerous.
Bangkok and its metropolitan area also recorded “orange” readings at several monitoring stations, indicating air quality that was harmful to health.
“The situation is serious and requires precautionary measures for the entire population.”
said CAPM, based on its data.
Bangkok and key tourist hubs among worst affected
The list of heavily affected provinces included Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Sakhon and Ayutthaya. Popular tourist destinations such as Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi and Chonburi (Pattaya) were also reported to be under significant smog.
Even in the northeast, air quality in Khon Kaen and Nakhon Ratchasima was described as poor. The situation raised concerns for both local residents and visitors throughout the central and eastern regions.
Outlook for late January 2026 remained bleak
According to CAPM, hopes for a quick improvement were low, with a worsening of conditions expected between 22 and 28 January 2026. For Bangkok and the central region, a further rise in pollution was forecast from 24 January onward.
The north, northeast and east were expected to face critical levels throughout the entire week. Only the south of the country was projected to remain largely unaffected by the smog crisis during this period.
Authorities urged masks and reduced outdoor activity
Health recommendations from the authorities called on the general population to sharply limit time spent outdoors. When going outside was unavoidable, wearing an N95 mask was described as essential, with simple face coverings deemed insufficient.
Risk groups such as children, older people, pregnant women and those with pre-existing conditions were advised to avoid any outdoor activities. They were urged to seek medical attention immediately if they developed symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath.

Mobile applications such as Air4Thai and AirBKK delivered up-to-date air quality data directly to smartphones, helping people plan daily movements and reduce exposure. The coming week was expected to be a major strain on the lungs of residents and visitors across much of Thailand.
Fine particles linked to serious long-term health risks
The ultra-fine PM2.5 particles were described as small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream. They have been linked to respiratory diseases and cardiovascular problems and may promote cancer over the long term.
The current smog episode was portrayed as part of a recurring pattern that typically returned at the beginning of each year in Thailand. The main causes cited were vehicle emissions, industrial pollution and traditional field burning.
Recurring crisis highlights need for broader solutions
As long as comprehensive measures remained absent, people were left with few options beyond self-protection and hoping for cleaner air. The reporting suggested that, despite visible warnings and widespread mask use, the underlying structural causes of the smog crisis were still unresolved.
The ongoing situation underscored how an invisible hazard in the air could pose greater harm than many more obvious disasters, making everyday activities a health risk for millions.
