THAILAND – A shocking video circulating online shows a foreign tour guide threatening a group of Chinese tourists after they declined to buy goods at a shop he had recommended.
Video captures intimidation
The footage, shot on a coach transporting a Chinese tour group, shows the guide screaming into a microphone and accusing the tourists of disrespect for not purchasing products from the shop. In one moment of the clip he can be heard warning, “You will not return to China!” The tourists appear frightened; one passenger filmed the scene secretly until the guide noticed and forced the recording to be deleted.
Zero‑dollar tours and coercion
Authorities and industry experts link the incident to the controversial “zero‑dollar” tour model, in which low advertised fares are subsidised by commissions from mandatory or coerced purchases in partner shops. According to reports, the guide lost expected commissions when the group refused to buy, leaving him unable to cover fees he allegedly paid to the agency.
Licensed guides condemn the act
Thailand’s licensed tour guides reacted with outrage, calling the behaviour unacceptable and harmful to the country’s reputation. A representative of a national guides association warned that such incidents erode tourist trust and disadvantage legitimate operators who follow the law.
Government under pressure
On 10 September a delegation of Thai guides formally complained to Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, urging tougher action against foreign guides working illegally and unregistered tourism businesses. The Tourism Department and Tourist Police have been urged to intensify inspections and increase penalties, but critics say enforcement remains inconsistent.
What comes next
The tourism sector, still recovering from pandemic losses, is anxious to avoid reputational damage. Industry groups are calling for immediate investigations, stricter controls on guide licencing, higher fines for illegal operators and greater protections for visitors. The viral clip has already provoked renewed demands for concrete enforcement measures.
