A Curious Pizza Dispute
A strange controversy erupted this week over alleged “prison pizzas.” Former Democrat MP Watchara Phetthong accused ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra of trying to ingratiate himself with guards and fellow inmates at Bangkok’s Klong Prem Central Prison by handing out boxes of pizza.
But the Corrections Department has issued a sharp denial. Kanokwan Jiewchuaphan, director of Nonthaburi Prison and deputy spokeswoman, insisted the pizzas had nothing to do with Thaksin. They were, she explained, purchased on September 13 for police and prison officers stationed outside the jail during a traffic operation.
“The meals were for officers working on duty in front of the prison. They were not connected to Mr. Thaksin in any way,” Kanokwan stressed, dismissing the claims as unfounded gossip.
Strict Rules, Rare Exceptions
Watchara also alleged that Thaksin exceeded spending limits for inmates, hinting at special privileges. Prison authorities rejected this as well. While directors sometimes allow small celebrations—such as New Year or birthdays—Kanokwan said these are rare, closely regulated, and designed to prevent any prisoner from gaining undue influence.
“Everything follows the rules,” she said firmly. “Mr. Thaksin complies with all regulations and has not requested any special treatment.”
The former premier, now serving his sentence in the medical wing, reportedly spends his time reading. He recently underwent a routine chest X-ray by the prison’s mobile screening unit, a standard tuberculosis check for all new inmates. Results are pending, but no serious health concerns have been detected.
Family Visits and Legal Hurdles
On Thursday, Thaksin is due to receive visitors—his daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra and his lawyer Winyat Chartmontree. They are expected to discuss both his health and the sensitive question of parole with prison officials.
The “pizza affair” has meanwhile added another surreal twist to the long-running political drama surrounding one of Thailand’s most divisive figures. Whether seen as a symbol of privilege or simply a misunderstanding, the story has reignited debate over fairness and equality behind bars.
