Thaksin Shinawatra Granted Parole with Electronic Monitoring

Committee approves parole for Thaksin Shinawatra; he will be released in May with an electronic ankle bracelet.

BANGKOK, THAILAND – Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was granted parole and will be released from prison under strict conditions in May.

Committee decides on hundreds of inmates

The subcommittee on parole reviews met on April 29, 2026 for its fourth session. Experts reviewed a total of 920 cases of inmates eligible for early release. Authorities approved 859 regular paroles and ten special cases. The reviewers rejected 49 applications, while two other cases were initially postponed.

Thaksin meets all legal requirements

According to the Department of Corrections, Thaksin Shinawatra meets all necessary conditions of the current prison law. The decision is based on ministerial regulations on inmate benefits from 2019 and 2021. The committee considered the circumstances of his offenses and the duration of his detention. The credibility of his supervisor and public safety also played a role in the positive decision.

Advanced age favors release

Special reasons support the parole of the former prime minister, according to authorities. He is over 70 years old and his remaining sentence is not more than one year. In addition, the reviewers certified successful rehabilitation and positive behavioral development during detention. The committee assessed the risk of re-offending as low.

Strict monitoring via electronic ankle bracelet

Thaksin Shinawatra’s release is planned for May 11, 2026. From that day, he officially meets all conditions for regular parole and may leave prison. However, until the final expiration of his sentence, he must wear an electronic monitoring device. He is also required to strictly adhere to all imposed parole rules.

Return to a life under observation

The decision marks a turning point for the influential politician, who remains under constant surveillance despite his freedom. The electronic monitoring ensures he complies with court orders.
