Thailand’s ChatGPT boom shocks world

Thailand has suddenly become one of the world’s most surprising AI powerhouses. The use of ChatGPT in the kingdom has skyrocketed, with weekly active users quadrupling in just twelve months. The surge has caught even OpenAI off guard – so much so that Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon flew to Bangkok to witness the trend firsthand, calling Thailand’s embrace of AI a “decisive competitive advantage.”

Bangkok forum puts Thailand on AI map

The moment came at the exclusive “AI LEAP: Turning Today’s Disruption into Tomorrow’s Advantage” forum in Bangkok. Kwon made his Thailand debut alongside Ruangroj Poonpol, Group Chairman of KBTG and one of Southeast Asia’s most influential tech leaders.

“Thailand just gets AI,” Kwon told the packed audience. The evidence, he said, was overwhelming: ChatGPT usage has multiplied four times in a single year, proof that Thais are not just curious but eager to integrate advanced technology into daily life.

Young Thais driving the revolution

The statistics tell a striking story. Young people between 18 and 24 are the main engine of the boom. For them, ChatGPT is more than a tool – it is a companion for learning, creativity and self-improvement.

They use it for everything from translation and tutorials to exam prep, personal growth and creative writing. “AI should be seen as a bridge, not a wall,” said Ruangroj. “It helps close gaps in opportunity and allows young people to learn and create on equal footing.”

Tech-friendly nation embraces AI

Thailand has long been quick to adopt new technology, from early mobile banking to the social media explosion. That agility, experts argue, is now paying off in the AI space.

“Thailand’s optimism and adaptability are competitive advantages,” said Kwon. He praised how ordinary Thais are harnessing AI not to replace but to empower – opening new doors in education, healthcare, creativity and entrepreneurship. The result, he added, is “inclusive growth,” exactly the kind of progress the global AI community wants to see.

From creative hub to AI powerhouse

Thailand’s reputation for creativity – especially in advertising, design and content – is already world-renowned. But when that flair combines with the raw power of AI, industry leaders believe the country could emerge as a genuine creative superpower.

“When Thai creativity meets AI, magic happens,” said Ruangroj. The Bangkok forum left no doubt: Thailand’s AI journey is not simply about consumers trying out a novelty app. It is about a young generation demanding change, a government willing to experiment, and a culture that thrives on adaptation.

A new regional leader?

While other countries remain bogged down in regulatory debates, Thais are rolling up their sleeves and making AI part of everyday life. The numbers are dazzling, the optimism infectious.

If current trends continue, Thailand could position itself not just as a regional leader in Southeast Asia but as a global model for how technology, creativity and inclusivity can fuel an AI revolution.
