BANGKOK, THAILAND – A British travel insurer has ranked Thailand among the countries with the most online complaints about alleged taxi scams worldwide.
Global scan of taxi complaints
The British insurer AllClear evaluated more than 450 posts on the platform Reddit and over 30,000 comments about taxi scams since December 2025. Based on these public accounts, the company identified countries where travelers most frequently reported problems with taxis.
Turkey, India and Thailand lead the ranking
According to AllClear, most comments referred to Turkey, which recorded 4,224 entries and nearly twice as many complaints as India in second place with 2,301 comments. Thailand ranked third with 2,169 comments, followed by Vietnam with 1,741 and Egypt with 1,715 posts.
Other destinations drawing attention
Also in the leading group of countries were Australia with 1,598, Mexico with 1,367, Morocco with 1,329, the United States with 1,283 and Canada with 995 comments. Among the top fifteen destinations were France with 957, Colombia with 924, the Philippines with 840, Italy with 832 and Norway with 799 reported cases.
Insurer urges travelers to prepare
AllClear explicitly advised travelers to research local taxi fares before starting a journey in order to better recognize inflated prices.
“Travelers should inform themselves about local taxi tariffs before the ride begins so they can more easily spot excessively high prices.”

Call to report suspected fraud
The insurer also recommended that suspected fraud attempts be consistently reported to the relevant authorities to support enforcement of local rules.

Questions over Thailand’s image
A British study placed Thailand third worldwide for taxi complaints in online forums, raising concerns about the country’s reputation in international tourism. The findings also highlighted that social media data did not necessarily provide a complete picture, leaving open whether the trend reflected online exaggeration or everyday problems for visitors.
