Thailand Named World’s Top Food Destination

Condé Nast Traveller readers rank Thailand first in global cuisine survey

BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thailand was voted the world’s best culinary destination in Condé Nast Traveller’s Readers’ Choice Awards 2025, achieving a near-perfect score.

Thailand tops global food rankings

The US travel magazine’s readers awarded Thailand an overall rating of 98.33 out of 100 points, putting it ahead of strong international competitors. According to the justification cited, the result was driven by bold flavours, unforgettable dishes and a unique street-food culture.

Italy, described as an eternal rival, ranked second with 96.92 percent, while Japan’s precise cuisine, including its world-famous sushi, reached 96.77 percent.

“It’s not just about the taste; it’s the entire experience,”

said one reader of the magazine.

Bangkok restaurants among world’s best

Seven restaurants from Bangkok made it into the top 35 worldwide, underscoring the culinary diversity of the Thai capital. The recognition did not only go to high-end establishments, as the jury was equally impressed by the country’s renowned street food.

Dishes ranging from sizzling Pad Thai and fragrant Tom Yum Goong to rich Green Curry were highlighted as favourites among food lovers around the globe. Whether a bowl of noodles at a street stall or an elaborate course in a fine-dining restaurant, Thai cuisine was said to leave a lasting impression.

Strong competition in the top 10

Behind the leading trio of Thailand, Italy and Japan, Vietnam took fourth place with 96.67 percent for its fresh, herb-driven dishes. Spain followed in fifth with 95.91 percent, supported by its world-famous tapas culture.

New Zealand, with a rating of 95.79 percent, was recognised for indigenous Māori cooking techniques. The rest of the top 10 was completed by Sri Lanka, Greece, South Africa, and Peru and the Maldives, which finished level on points.

What sets Thai food apart

The warmth of the people, bustling night markets and enticing aromas were described as creating an incomparable culinary experience. Thai cuisine was portrayed as combining complex spices, fresh ingredients and a perfect balance between sweet, sour, salty and spicy.

This success was framed as a tribute to the variety of Thai cuisine and the memorable culinary experiences found across the country, from street stalls to the realm of fine dining.

From street stalls to star cuisine

From modest cookshops to gourmet restaurants, Thailand was said to captivate visitors with taste, atmosphere and heartfelt hospitality. The accolade raised the question of how the tourism sector might now meet the expectations created by this international recognition.

The award was presented as confirming Thailand’s position as a leading destination for travellers seeking both everyday street dishes and sophisticated culinary creations.
