Digital Renewal for Drivers Under 55
Thailand is modernising driver licence renewals with a new ministerial regulation, allowing residents under 55 to complete the process entirely online. Published in the Royal Gazette, the regulation takes effect on March 4, 2026, offering a convenient alternative to traditional, time-consuming visits to transport offices.
Deputy Transport Minister Surapong Piyachote emphasised the benefits of the new system: “Healthy drivers will see no changes in their ability to drive,” he said, noting that the reform focuses on convenience and efficiency for younger drivers.
Maintaining Safety Standards for Older Drivers
Drivers over 55 or those whose licences have lapsed for more than a year remain subject to in-person renewal. Essential safety checks, such as eyesight and reaction time tests, ensure all drivers meet necessary standards, preserving road safety across the country.
How to Renew Online
Eligible drivers can submit renewal applications via the Department of Land Transport’s website. The streamlined process reduces waiting times, lowers administrative workload, and aligns with Thailand’s broader push towards digital government services.
