THAILAND – Thailand is currently grappling with a concerning influenza outbreak, as over 700,000 cases have been reported since the beginning of the year, resulting in 61 fatalities. Health authorities are sounding the alarm, urging those in high-risk groups to get vaccinated without delay.
Children and Seniors Most at Risk
According to the Department of Disease Control, between January 1 and October 8, 2025, a total of 702,238 influenza cases have been registered. Dr. Taweechai Visanuyothin, Director of Disease Control Office 9 in Nakhon Ratchasima, warns, “Children aged 5 to 9 are the most frequently affected, while older adults face the highest risk of death.”
The transition from the rainy season to cooler weather is fueling the spread of respiratory infections. Influenza is transmitted through droplets when coughing or sneezing and typically presents with high fever, cough, and severe fatigue.
Schools and Workplaces Identified as Hotspots
Crowded classrooms and offices are accelerating the virus’s spread. Health officials strongly advise the public to:
- Avoid crowded places
- Wear masks
- Wash hands frequently
However, the most effective preventive measure remains the annual flu vaccination. This is especially recommended for seven high-risk groups: pregnant women, young children, individuals with chronic illnesses, those over 65, immunocompromised people, and persons with obesity.

Authorities emphasize, “Vaccination significantly reduces the risk of severe illness and death.” Thailand is working intensively to ensure nationwide vaccine availability and closely monitor the situation.
Given the alarming numbers, experts are appealing to the public’s sense of responsibility: “Take preventive measures seriously to mitigate the impact of flu season.”
What to Do If Symptoms Appear
At the first signs of sudden fever, body aches, and cough, individuals are urged to seek medical attention immediately. Early treatment with antiviral medication can be lifesaving, particularly for those at higher risk.
