BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s government plans a massive expansion of social protection for hundreds of thousands of street workers.
Protection for street heroes
Labour Minister Julapun Amornvivat praised the riders’ work as honest and vital for society. He stressed the extremely high accident risk they face daily in traffic.
So far, more than 200,000 of these riders work without any state security. The government now sees it as its duty to finally provide these workers with adequate protection.
Safety through new campaign
At yesterday’s event titled “Safe Driving, Safe Living,” the minister personally distributed protective helmets. The ministry aims to raise awareness of the dangers in everyday traffic.
An impressive convoy set off to launch the campaign. Over 200 motorcycle taxi riders and delivery drivers took part to highlight their situation.
Social security by 2026
The ministry’s ambitious goal is full integration of all freelance riders into the social security system by the end of 2026. This would guarantee them a financial basis in case of accident or illness.
The minister pledged to personally work for the implementation of these new regulations. For the riders, this step means significantly greater security for their professional and private future.
Justice for freelance riders
The planned reform officially recognises the hard work of delivery riders and offers them moral and financial support. It sends an important signal for social justice within Thailand’s labour world.
