The National Health Security Office (NHSO) has officially detailed its gender-affirming hormone services for transgender individuals, offering both oral and injectable options under professional supervision. Experts strongly advise consultations to ensure safe, effective treatment tailored to individual needs. If demand surpasses projections, the NHSO plans to increase the allocated budget for the following year.
Nithiwat Saengruang, Assistant Secretary-General of the NHSO, confirmed that the board approved these benefits in July. The policy emerged after discussions between transgender activists and the previous prime minister, evolving into a formal initiative under the current administration. Developed collaboratively with medical professionals and transgender advocacy groups, the program is informed by research, expert guidance, and public consultations.
The hormone service package accommodates a variety of individual requirements. For male-to-female transitions, younger patients may receive only hormone blockers, while older individuals might use oral medications to achieve desired physical changes such as broader hips, softer skin, reduced facial hair, and a softer voice. For female-to-male transitions, injections are typically employed, producing deeper voices, facial hair growth, and increased muscle mass.
Comprehensive medical and psychological evaluations are mandatory for anyone seeking these services. Specialists—including doctors, nurses, social workers, and psychologists—assess gender dysphoria, potential health risks, and the body’s ability to revert to its original state if necessary. Risks may include cardiovascular issues, stroke, allergies, or cancer, making careful monitoring essential.
Detailed health screenings also address other medical or psychological concerns, ensuring holistic care. The NHSO has allocated 140 million baht for the program, covering costs of laboratory tests, cholesterol checks, and follow-ups every three months, six months, one year, or two years. If demand exceeds expectations, the agency is prepared to increase funding in the subsequent fiscal year.
Currently, hormone medications are being procured for Bangkok, with existing clinics continuing to provide services. The Ministry of Public Health is developing models to expand the program to other provinces. Telemedicine will support consultations and monitoring for individuals already stable on their hormone regimens.
Nithiwat highlighted the initiative as a major step forward, providing hope and accessible healthcare for transgender individuals across Thailand. The NHSO plans to publish an updated list of hospitals and clinics offering these services on its website, ensuring nationwide awareness and accessibility.
