Cambodia Must Act Before Dialogue, Says Thailand
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul makes clear that Thailand will not enter peace talks with Cambodia unless the neighbouring country first complies with previous ceasefire agreements.
Speaking on October 8, Anutin responds to reports that US President Donald Trump has offered to mediate negotiations. While he welcomes the gesture, Anutin stresses, “Thailand was the first to be invaded… If they want talks, they must first comply with the basic agreements already reached.”
He demands Cambodia withdraw troops and weapons, remove any encroaching groups, and clear landmines allegedly planted inside Thai territory.
Border Disputes Heighten Tensions
Anutin’s comments refer to ongoing disputes near Ban Nong Chan and Ban Nong Ya Kaew in Sa Kaeo’s Khok Sung district. Cambodian communities and military activity have been reported along the border, raising concerns in Thailand.
The prime minister says, “Trump is on another continent, while Cambodia is our neighbour. If he can convince Cambodia to comply and guarantee no further aggression, then we are ready to talk.”
Security and Sovereignty Remain Top Priorities
Anutin reiterates that Thailand’s priority is protecting its sovereignty and national interest, regardless of international gestures. He dismisses Cambodia’s move to nominate Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize as irrelevant to Thailand’s position.
He also addresses reports of possible civilian-led unrest at the Sa Kaeo border, assuring that Thai security agencies are prepared and will act under the rule of law if sovereignty is violated again.
Deadline for Cambodian Civilians to Leave
Following the General Border Committee (GBC) agreement, Anutin orders Cambodian civilians to vacate Ban Nong Chan in Sa Kaeo’s Khok Sung district by Friday, October 10. The agreement includes withdrawing troops and weapons, tackling scam networks, and improving border management between Thailand and Cambodia.
