BANGKOK, THAILAND – Deputy Prime Minister Yotsanun Wongsawat led the Pheu Thai Party at the Bangkok Pride Festival 2026, using the parade as a platform for Thailand’s bid to host World Pride 2030. Marriage equality, diversity, and the economic potential of the “Rainbow Economy” were central themes as thousands paraded under the banner “Patch the World with Pride.” The message was clear: both politicians and organizers are openly presenting Thailand as a candidate for one of the largest international LGBTQ+ gatherings.
Yotsanun marches at the forefront
The Deputy Prime Minister led the Pheu Thai contingent in the parade on Sunday. He was joined by Minister of Social Development Nikorn Somklang, party executives, members of parliament, and numerous party members.
The festival, themed “Patch the World with Pride,” attracted participants from many communities. Yotsanun stated, “Today, I am participating in Pride Month to promote equality in all areas.”
Equality should reach everyone
Yotsanun repeatedly emphasized that equality must extend beyond specific groups, pointing to the diverse participants along the parade route.
He highlighted the participation of autistic children, commenting, “Today’s parade is diverse, including the LGBTQ+ community, and remarkably, autistic children are also participating.”
World Pride 2030: Duel against Barcelona
The government is strategically leveraging the parade to bolster Thailand’s bid for World Pride 2030. Yotsanun described hosting the event as a significant milestone and stressed its strategic importance for the bid.
He mentioned that the competition has narrowed to two candidates: “Now, only Barcelona and we remain to host it.” This head-to-head competition brings Thailand’s campaign to its final stage.
Marriage Equality as proof of progress
Supporters cite the passage of a marriage equality law as a key argument. Thailand is reportedly the first Southeast Asian country to enact such legislation.
Yotsanun indicated that work on marriage equality is progressing: “We are working on marriage equality and various projects to show everyone what kind of equality Thailand offers, which will allow us to compete.”
Rainbow Economy and cultural visibility
The bid is also being advanced with economic arguments. Supporters view World Pride as a catalyst for the “Rainbow Economy” and a driver for increased tourism.
Organizers anticipate potential tourism revenue and enhanced international attention. Beyond economics, proponents emphasize cultural benefits, suggesting that a major international event could elevate Thailand’s profile and strengthen its cultural capital. The parade thus served as a showcase for organizational capabilities.
Thailand in the final selection phase
With only Barcelona remaining as a competitor, Thailand has effectively advanced its selection decision to the final phase. The Bangkok Pride 2026 served as a publicly visible calling card.
Supporters and government officials used the parade to demonstrate Thailand’s readiness for equality and its capability to host a global event.
