BANGKOK, THAILAND – The government announced sweeping rail reforms to make train travel safer, cheaper, and more efficient.
Cheaper Fares for All
Lalida Periswiwattana from the Prime Minister’s Office announced on May 3, 2026 comprehensive relief for the public, with the Ministry of Transport backing the initiative. The government has set clear fare caps to prevent unfair pricing.
Commuters will particularly benefit from the plan to abolish transfer fees when switching between different train lines. In addition, children, seniors, and people with disabilities will receive special discounts on ticket bookings.
Protection Against Delays and Cancellations
The new Railway Traffic Act, which came into force on March 27, 2026, massively strengthens passenger rights. Operators are now legally obliged to adequately compensate passengers for delays or bus replacements.
This regulation aims to ensure greater fairness and strengthen trust in public transport. The government wants to noticeably reduce the daily financial burden on citizens.
Strict Safety Standards for Trains
Passenger safety is the top priority in the modernization of rail traffic. Authorities have defined strict standards for infrastructure and vehicle stability.
All personnel must now provide certifications to meet the high requirements. Operators must also take out accident insurance to fully protect passengers in an emergency.
Expansion of the National Rail Network
The government is accelerating investments in the entire national rail network following the meeting of the Railway Policy Committee No. 1/2026 on April 30, 2026. In urban areas, new electric trains are the focus, while in the regions, double-track lines are being built.
These measures are intended to increase logistics efficiency and support long-term economic growth. Involving private companies will also promote competition and improve service quality.
