TEL AVIV, ISRAEL – Israel’s airspace remained largely closed to commercial flights until mid-April, disrupting travel links between the country and Thailand.
Flight ban until mid-April
The Israeli government announced that it would keep its airspace closed to most traffic until at least 16 April, extending an earlier shutdown. All international airlines suspended their operations to and from the country.
Only the two Israeli carriers El Al and Arkia continued to operate irregular flights between Israel and Thailand. These services could be cancelled at any time, leaving passengers with limited certainty.
Thai nationals in Israel
Thai citizens who urgently needed to leave Israel were advised to contact the Thai embassy in Tel Aviv. Officials there were tasked with arranging alternative routes out of the country.
The embassy said it provided support to those facing hardship and seeking to depart as quickly as possible. Assistance focused on helping travellers navigate the rapidly changing situation.
Flights from Bahrain to Bangkok
Bahrain’s Gulf Air announced it would maintain flights between Dammam and Bangkok until 30 April. Dammam served as an important transport hub for passengers travelling from Bahrain.
This connection allowed travellers to continue flying internationally despite restrictions affecting routes via Israel. It offered an additional option for those trying to reach Thailand.
Talks with Iran
The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs continued discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran to secure safe passage for Thai-flagged ships through the Strait of Hormuz. The talks aimed to protect maritime traffic amid heightened regional tensions.
Authorities were also searching for three Thai nationals who had been missing since an attack on the Thai-flagged bulk carrier Mayuree Naree. The incident underscored risks facing commercial vessels in the area.
Ongoing conflict in the Middle East
The war in the Middle East further escalated as Houthi rebels in Yemen began launching rocket attacks on Israel. At the same time, Iranian strikes on the infrastructure of Arab nations continued.
Israeli and US warplanes kept targeting strategic sites in Iran. The air forces also carried out what were described as targeted killings of leaders of the Islamic Republic.
