Kanyavee “Mint” Nanongtoom, a 20-year-old veterinary student, is at the centre of a heartbreaking mystery. Her mother, Nongnaphat, 47, is discovered lifeless and unclothed on a massage bed in Yuki City, Ibaraki Prefecture, after six months working at a Thai-owned spa.
Mint tells Paveena Hongsakul, founder of the Pavena Foundation for Children and Women, that she suspects foul play. She asks for help to uncover the truth and bring her mother’s body home to Thailand.
Final call reveals chilling details
Mint recalls her last conversation with her mother late on October 4. Nongnaphat confides she was strangled by a Japanese customer who seemed mentally unstable but managed to escape after threatening to call police.
A friend of Nongnaphat later tells Mint she last spoke to her mother around noon on October 5. The spa owner claims Nongnaphat had gone out with a man, but soon after, Mint learns her mother is dead. The cause remains unclear.
Spa owner accused of hiding evidence
Mint grows suspicious when the spa owner deletes all traces of her mother from the spa’s website. She posts an appeal for information on social media, only to be threatened with a lawsuit for damaging the spa’s reputation.
“I just want to know what really happened to my mum,” Mint says. The Thai student’s determination to find answers intensifies as more inconsistencies emerge.
Foundation and officials step in
Paveena pledges support, coordinating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Interpol, and the Royal Thai Embassy in Tokyo to investigate Nongnaphat’s death.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry grants Mint a 200,000-baht loan to repatriate her mother’s body. She also launches a donation campaign, with the foundation promising to help her finish her university degree.
