Thanwa ‘Fluke’ Thong-iam, 8, a student from Phetchaburi, takes a ride like no other in Thailand. He climbs onto his friendly buffalo, Kalamae, and heads for school—right through Khao Yoi, under the watchful eyes of amazed locals.
The duo have become celebrities. They turn a simple journey into a truly heartwarming moment for everyone they pass.
His Daily Journey—On Four Hooves
At 6:30 am, Fluke’s day begins—not with a bus, but by riding his two-and-a-half-year-old buffalo. Their school route stretches 800 meters along village roads.
Before every ride, Fluke bows with a respectful wai. He steps on Kalamae’s horns and swings up, showing off practiced grace.
Kalamae Waits for the School Bell
At Wat Nong Som School, Fluke, 8, a pupil, ties his loyal animal near a pond, just outside class. Kalamae grazes contentedly, never straying far.
‘She shakes her head and trots up when it’s time. It’s like she knows I’m going to school,’ Fluke says with pride. Kalamae seems to understand the daily routine, waiting for the 4 pm bell.
A Friendship That Started Early
Fluke’s mother, Nopparat Chuchuen, 37, a shop owner, says the buffalo joined their family as a baby. ‘Fluke adores animals, not just buffaloes—cows and chickens too,’ she reveals. He’s ridden Kalamae for almost two years now.
For them, the buffalo is more than transport—she’s gentle, calm and completely at ease with Fluke. Every day, she takes the same path home and back, with no fuss.
The Village’s Most Unusual Stars
Not just a personal joy—Fluke and Kalamae have become the talk of the town. Villagers often spot them trotting by houses and fields, and the sight brings smiles across faces, old and young.
‘It reminds us of earlier days, when buffaloes helped everywhere,’ a local farmer, 63, says. These days, such scenes are both rare and treasured.

Today, children spend more time on screens than outside. But Fluke and Kalamae show a different way—one where real bonds with animals matter.
